Ingredients
  

Cake:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Sauce:
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups water or maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cake: Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix sugar, milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
  3. Sauce: Combine brown sugar, water (or maple syrup), and butter in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  4. Pour batter into a greased 8x8 inch baking dish. Carefully pour hot sauce over batter.
  5. Bake 30-40 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving.
